With the election of Abraham Lincoln, who vowed
to prevent slavery's expansion in 1860, the state
legislature immediately called for a convention to
debate the question of secession. On December
24, 1860,
The convention decided, with considerable
unanimity, to declare South Carolina
independent, making it the first state to leave the
Union. In February it joined the Confederate
States of America. In April the American Civil War
began when Confederate forces attacked the
American fort at Fort Sumter, in Charleston,
